Exploring the Intersection of Environment, Well-Being, and Behavior: The Role of Emotions in Sustainable Decision-Making

Environmental neuroscience is an emerging field that investigates how social and physical environments influence the brain and behavior. By rigorously quantifying environmental features, this field helps to uncover the ways in which our surroundings affect mental health and subjective well-being.

This interdisciplinary project explores the complex relationship between well-being, mental health, the urban environment, and nature. Taking an ecosystem service perspective for mental health, we aim to identify which environmental features have positive effects on brain function and behavior, shedding light on how nature and urban spaces can support mental well-being.

In addition to environmental factors, we focus on the emotional drivers of sustainable behavior. While much of behavioral science has focused on cognitive processes, the role of **emotions** in promoting sustainable actions remains underexplored. Emotions hold significant potential to influence **pro-environmental decision-making**, whether in choices about food, clothing, travel, or other domains.

Key Research Questions:

  1. How do environmental features impact brain function and behavior? We aim to identify the specific environmental factors that contribute to well-being and mental health.

  2. What role do emotions play in promoting sustainable behavior? We investigate the neural mechanisms underlying how emotions affect decisions related to sustainability.

By integrating environmental neuroscience and emotional research, this project seeks to advance our understanding of how environments and emotions together shape behavior, providing insights for fostering both mental well-being and sustainable actions.
